The Tel Aviv District Court on Tuesday sentenced Chris Sarpo, a 31-year-old Ghana citizen, to 25 years in prison for raping a woman and deliberately infecting two other women with AIDS while staying in Israel.


Sarpo was convicted of rape, acts of spreading an illness, threats and assaults under severe circumstances.


In the verdict, the judges wrote that "Public interest requires that he be removed from society, and to this day the accused has not reached an understanding regarding the damage he has caused."


Sarpo arrived in Israel in 1992, and until his arrest, despite knowing that he was carrying the AIDS virus, he deliberately had unprotected sexual intercourse with women, while not receiving any medical treatment or visiting his doctors.


The Tel Aviv District Court convicted Sarpo in July. The judges rejected his claim that the whole affair was a conspiracy planned by police and complainants.


'Should have used a condom'



Sarpo was convicted of raping an 18-year-old girl in 1997 in Eilat after the two had been having sexual intercourse by consent for a number of months. During a meeting in August 1997, the girl made it clear to him that she was not interested in having sexual intercourse with him, and in response he raped her while she struggled with him.



Two moths later, the girl was diagnosed as HIV-positive, and even notified Sarpo and asked him to take an AIDS test.


Sarpo was accused of maliciously having unprotected sexual intercourse with three women. According to one of the convictions, Sarpo committed the acts on a woman with whom he was in a romantic relationship. He was also convicted of assaulting and threatening her.


During the trial, Sarpo denied his guilt, but the judges rejected his claims altogether and wrote in their ruling that he knew he was an AIDS carrier and had the duty to use a condom during any sexual activity.


The judges also ruled that Sarpo's versions regarding the controversial issues were unreliable.
